Please follow all firearms, archery and range safety rules set forth by law and our club policy. You will find them on our website, posted on the range property and included in this email.
For up-to-the-minute information on club activities and events, stay tuned to our Facebook page and website. Also, you are welcome to attend our monthly meetings that are held on the third Wednesday of the month at 6 pm. Locations vary. They will be posted on Facebook.
To enter the club property, you must access the gate. The Gate Code is: 4988. This code will change every year as memberships run from January 1 st to December 31 st . For questions or concerns either email us or message us on Facebook. A board member will get back to you as soon as possible.

Range Safety Rules and Procedures
Please print and retain your information.
- Treat all firearms as if they were loaded.
- DO NOT point your firearm at anything you are not willing to destroy.
- Keep your finger off the trigger until you are on target and ready to shoot.
- Be sure of your target and what is beyond and around it.
Use the range at your own risk and follow all range safety rules!
Additional Range Safety Procedures
- All federal, state and local firearms and archery laws must be obeyed.
- All persons on the range must be a member of the Stephenson Mid County Sportsmen’s Club. Nonmember guests must be accompanied by their host. All range users must have a signed a member or guest liability waiver stating that they understand and will follow all range rules.
- No one under 18 years old is permitted on the range without being accompanied by by someone who is at least 21 years old.
- All children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by their parent or guardian. Children must not handle firearms, bows, ammunition, arrows, or other range items without direct supervision.
- On the firearm ranges, the firing line and “down range” begins at the north side of the shooting pavilions.
- Firearms must be safe (unloaded and actions open) when entering the firing line.
- All firearms not on the firing line must be either holstered, unloaded with their actions open, or unloaded and encased.
- Eye and Ear Protection is mandatory and must be worn by everyone on the range.
- Food, beverages and smoking are not permitted on the shooting ranges. Use the area in and around the club house.
- No alcoholic beverages are allowed on the range. Individuals under the influence of alcohol or drugs are not permitted on range property.
- Always keep your firearm unloaded until you are on the firing line and the range is declared “HOT” or cleared to shoot safely.
- Use only the correct ammunition for your firearm.
- CEASE FIRING: means to immediately stop shooting and make firearms safe if anyone calls for a “CEASE FIRE.”
- COLD RANGE: means that shooters must check with others to ensure that firearms are safe and unloaded, actions are open, and/ or all firearms are either holstered or laid down on the shooting bench before going down range to check targets. No one is permitted to handle firearms or ammunition while there is a COLD RANGE.
- When going down range, stay within the area directly to and from your target and backstop.
- HOT RANGE: means shooters must check with all others to ensure there is no one down range and in harm’s way. When the range is declared “HOT,” shooters are permitted to commence firing.
- Only shooters are permitted on the firing line. Shooters may move safe guns to and from the firing line only when the range is considered “HOT.”
- All shooters are responsible for their rounds staying within the confines of the range. Use an appropriately sized target placed below eye level or lower to help ensure that your shot stays within the range.
- Shooters may shoot only from the firing line at the target that is in line with their position. Shoot only at your target.
- Firing a bullet, arrow or projectile that results in damage to anything outside the range, range equipment, or structures may result in a repair, fine, removal from the range, expulsion from membership, and/ or legal prosectution, and/ or civil action.
- Exploding targets (such as Tannerite), explosives, tracer ammunition, armor piercing ammunition, and incendiary ammunition is strictly prohibited and may not be possessed by anyone on the range or range property.
- Drawing from a holster is NOT permitted unless you are a trained active-duty or retired police officer, military veteran, armed security official or a participant in a pistol training class with a certified instructor and range safety officer (RSO).
- Please respect our neighbors. Do not rapid fire or otherwise make unnecessary noise.
- Respect the Range: Pick up your spent brass and discard trash in the trash cans provided.
- Due to the release of toxins when shooting, you should wash your hands, face and body after shooting.
- Pregnant women and people with compromised health conditions should seek medical advice and approval before entering and using the range and range property.
- There is a one-hour time limit for use of the range if patrons are waiting. Please be kind to other members.
- Archery Range users must abide by these range rules.
- RANGE HOURS: are one hour after sunrise to one hour before sunset. There may be special shooting hours granted for approved law enforcement, security or training programs.
- Please keep the pit toilet or port-a-potty clean and organized. Do not throw anything but toilet paper into the vault.
- The club house is only accessible for SMCSC sanctioned events such as club meetings, hunter education classes, firearms training and archery training classes with the approval of any board member.
If you observe any violations of the range rules and procedures, please notify the SMCSC board of directors. Contact information is posted on the range and on the range property gate.
Violation of range rules may result in removal from the range, expulsion from membership and/ or criminal prosecution and/or civil liability.
